Dubbed the “evil superhero” movie, James Gunn’s latest project, Brightburn, is now playing in theaters nationwide! Find out all the details right here.

The summer movie season is kicking off with a horror movie that promises to shake things up by combining two unlikely genres. Brightburn will pioneer a new era as a superhero horror film.

Brightburn’s concept is a fairly straightforward one, what if a child from another world came to Earth but instead of becoming a Superman-like character, he becomes something far more sinister. Instead of being a hero origin story, it’s more about the rise of a villain.

Elizabeth Banks and David Denmen star as Tori and Kyle Breyer, the adoptive parents of Brandon Beyer/Brightburn. James Gunn serves as a producer with David Yarovesky directing. The movie will open up alongside Booksmart and Aladdin. It’s expected to gross $10-12 million on its opening weekend.

At present, Brightburn is receiving lukewarm reception from film critics who believe the film is pretty to watch and offers a welcome diversion from typical superhero fare, but it doesn’t take the concept far enough to be as groundbreaking as it wants to be.

Surprisingly, Brightburn has a pretty small budget so it will be interesting to see how the film performs over the weekend. It doesn’t need to make much for it to warrant a sequel given it will likely make its $6 million budget back over the course of its first week.

This film has less competition with Aladdin and Booksmart aiming for pretty different audiences. Ma will have a harder time next week as it competes against Godzilla: King of Monsters and Rocketman.
