Box office: Aladdin surprises as Booksmart struggles
By Sandy C.
Which movie or movies did you watch this weekend? You still have today, Memorial Day, to visit the theaters! As for the weekend, the numbers are in!
Box Office Mojo has updated its weekend numbers to give us the top ten movies of the weekend. Did the movie you went to go see make it on the list? Let’s find out!
New in theaters Friday, May 24, were Brightburn, Booksmart, and Aladdin. It’s not difficult to guess Disney’s live-action Aladdin won the weekend, but the movie by far exceeded expectations. Brightburn performed as expected. Meanwhile, Booksmart struggled to attract an audience.
Aladdin opens with $86.1 million domestically, add in its $121 million from overseas and it has a weekend total of $207.1 million. If it continues this well on Memorial Day, Aladdin will land on the top 5 best Memorial Day movies. Despite critics being tough on the movie, it has a high score with audiences.

- Barbie 2: Is a Barbie sequel happening?
Behind Aladdin is John Wick 3 with $24.3 million, followed by Avengers: Endgame, which gathered another $16.8 million to its growing total.
Avengers: Endgame isn’t getting to $2.7 billion (the total it needs to beat Avatar) very fast, but it will certainly get there eventually. With Memorial Day here and it being an extended weekend for many, audiences will surely head to theaters for a second or third watch.
Brightburn is at No. 5 with $7.5 million. Finally, Booksmart is at No. 6 with $6.5 million. Before you think Brightburn‘s $7.5 million is low, know that the reported budget for the film was $6 million. When you add the horror movie’s money overseas, its total is $15.3 million, more than doubling its budget already.
Booksmart, however, can’t say the same. Though the budget is unknown, it has not premiered overseas just yet.
