A list of every Stephen King adaptation in development for both film and television.

Does anyone remember that span of time between 1980 to1999 where there was a Stephen King movie released practically every single year? It was both a dark and wonderful time that gave us some of the best and some of the God-awful worst horror films of all time.

The author and his work became household names following the release of Carrie in 1976. The film put King on the map and reinvented the horror genre forever. However, after about 20 years, the craze dwindled down to almost nothing and nearly every King adaptation following that time was a poorly made flop. Now, history has come to a full loop and the craze is back with a vengeance.

In 2017, director Andy Muschietti brought King back into the spotlight with his adaptation of the novel “IT” about a killer clown hunting down a group of misfit kids. The film was released September 8, 2017, to the best box office opening ever given to an R-rated movie and it went on to become the highest-grossing horror film of all time with an earning of over $700 million.

To top it off IT became a hit with both critics and fans alike and developed a devoted following in a short span of time. This strong, and surprising, response lit a fire under every film studio in Hollywood and they’ve since been scrambling to get their hands on every Stephen King novel, hoping to find the next $700 million money maker in there.

Luckily the author has over 50 books and 200 short stories to pick from so there’s no shortage of projects. Exactly how many of King’s works are in development? Which are remakes of classic films and which are first-time adaptations?

This is a list of every single Stephen King adaptation currently in development.

Creepshow

Partially based on the short stories “Weeds” and “The Crate” by King, Creepshow was a collaboration effort between Stephen King, in his screenwriter debut, and director George A. Romero released in 1982. An anthology horror film separated into five stories inspired by the EC and DC horror comics of the 1950s, Creepshow quickly developed a cult following and was hailed a horror classic upon its release.

It was only a matter of time before we entered another King Renaissance, and someone pressed the remake button. Only instead of a film, Creepshow will be turned into a series for a streaming service owned by AMC that I’m sure most of you probably haven’t heard of.

Greg Nicotero, producer of The Walking Dead, will turn the film into a new anthology series for Shudder, a service operated by AMC networks that specializes in horror. Nicotero will direct the pilot and produce the series as well as supervise the horror/gore effects.

Each episode of the Creepshow will consist of two separate stories and will be directed by a different director. One of the segments reportedly included in the pilot episode will be based on King’s short story, “Survivor Type”.  Tobin Bell has been cast and Adrienne Barbau, from the original film, will return in a new role. Creepshow is set to premiere on Shudder this year.
