Now playing in theaters: Ma
By Mads Lennon
Get ready to be seriously disturbed by Octavia Spencer’s hair-raising turn as Ma in this psychological thriller now playing in theaters.
A group of teenagers get roped into hanging out a lonely woman’s home. Her name is Sue Ann, but the kids come to know her as Ma. Over time, Ma forms a tight-knit bond with these teenagers and allows them to use her house for all kinds of debauchery and partying they can’t do anywhere else.
What initially begins as a symbiotic relationship in which the teens had a fun place to hang out and Sue Ann was able to stop being so lonely, spirals into an obsessive fixation on Sue Ann’s behalf as she starts to stalk the teenagers. It’s now out in theaters.

Based on the trailers, this looks like it’s going to be a super disturbing psychological thriller. I’ve been eagerly awaiting Ma’s debut for months now.
It helps the film is also directed by Tate Taylor, who directed Octavia in the acclaimed film, The Help. Starring alongside Octavia Spencer is Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Luke Evans, Missi Pyle, Alison Janney, and McKaley Miller.
I would advise going to see this movie in theaters on opening weekend if possible since it’s likely to be a movie with several twists and you’ll want to avoid spoilers. Ma is a smaller-budgeted film at only $5 million as compared to the big-budgets for the movies it’ll be competing against, Godzilla: King of Monsters and Rocketman. The good news is, it’ll be easier for the film to make back its budget, but I’m hoping it doesn’t get pummelled at the box office. I’m biased because I’m a big fan of Octavia Spencer’s, but I would love to see this movie succeed!
If you haven’t gotten the chance to view the trailer yet, you can’t check it out right here:
