Christopher Nolan’s epic showdown between Batman and the Joker comes to Netflix as The Dark Knight is now available to stream.

What is the greatest superhero movie of all-time? If the debate doesn’t include The Dark Knight, then the conversation is invalid. Now, you can relive one of the best superhero films in history as Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, The Dark Knight, is now available to stream on Netflix.

As the second film in a trilogy, The Dark Knight picks up shortly after where Batman Begins left off. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is still protecting Gotham from crime as Batman. However, a new criminal called the Joker (Heath Ledger) proves to be Batman’s toughest test as the Joker seeks to inspire chaos in Gotham. Batman is forced to team up with Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) in order to stop the Joker before he conquers Gotham.

What separates The Dark Knight from previous superhero films is its storytelling and acting. The best superhero films tend to stand on their own and cross over into “great film” territory instead of staying in the “great superhero film” category. It’s as if The Dark Knight is a crime-heist thriller with superhero elements, not a superhero film with other action elements. Christopher Nolan has stated that his inspiration for The Dark Knight was Michael Mann’s Heat starring Robert Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

Along with the storytelling, the acting performances are out of this world. Bale, Oldman, and Dent all give thrilling, effective performances. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Maggie Gyllenhaal all thrive in supporting roles. However, this movie belongs to the late Heath Ledger. Ledger arguably gave not only the greatest comic book performance ever onscreen, but one of the most memorable and iconic acting roles in the history of film. Ledger was posthumously awarded an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.

The Dark Knight was one of the rare superhero films to be universally acclaimed both critically and financially. The film grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and holds a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
