2. Bing is Manx’s new henchman.

Poor befuddled Bing. I do feel bad for the guy. He’s a tender-hearted dude who has a terrible job where he is belittled and unappreciated on a daily basis. He comes from an abusive home. His only friend is a high school girl (Vic), and he is ripe for manipulation. The idea of getting into Christmasland becomes a holy grail for him. It’s clear he wants to feel worthy and important. Manx senses that and preys on it.

He takes Bing to the Graveyard of What Might Be, which is a horrific place full of abused children trapped in ice. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of when NOS4A2 is being literal and when it’s being surreal. In this case, we’re in another mindscape of Manx’s. He claims these children need to be saved from abusive homes and apologizes for not saving Bing.

He exploits Bing’s violent past to encourage him to join his mission. He needs help in “saving” 10 children and after seeing the graveyard and being coaxed and cajoled by Manx’s faux-altruism, agrees. Since it was established in the pilot that Vic and Bing know one another and have established a rapport over comic books, I’m guessing it will be Bing that makes Manx aware of Vic and/or Haley.

1. Haley will probably be kidnapped by Manx.

As I mentioned before, Vic isn’t at the part in her hero’s journey where she accepts her mission and tries to stop the bad guy. She needs a little motivation. What better way to urge her on her path than by kidnapping the neighborhood girl she’s grown attached to? NOS4A2 has carefully laid out hints that Haley may be getting abused by her mother.

She’s the right age. And she serves no other purpose to the plot. She exists to get kidnapped and put Vic on Manx’s trail. Plus, Vic briefly hallucinated that Haley was carrying a candy cane – a Christmasland staple, which is basically the calling card for Charlie Manx.
