The final trailer for Stranger Things promises a season of full of romance, terror, and destruction. Here are five questions we have for Season 3.

As the tagline says, “One summer can change everything.” The wait is almost over. After a 20 month hiatus, the kids of Hawkins, Indiana, are returning for another adventure in the third season of Netflix’s hit show, Stranger Things, which will be available to stream on July 4.

Up until now, the plot has been carefully under wraps. The first trailer promised a summer full of fun, romance, and 80s nostalgia. However, the latest trailer is quite the opposite. Trouble is on the horizon for our favorite kids and adults. The tone is significantly darker and the scenes depicted are terrifying.

The final trailer poses a lot of thoughts so here are five questions for Stranger Things Season 3.

1. Who is the ominous voice speaking in the trailer?

More from Netflix

Throughout most of the trailer, there is a dark and ominous voice in the background that is talking to Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Will. The spine-tingling voice says, “We are going to end you. We’re going to end your friends. Then… we are going to end everyone.” Who is speaking? We can infer that the voice is from the Mind Flayer, the frightening creature that has terrified the people of Hawkins for years in the Upside Down. However, the Mind Flayer needs to communicate through a human host, which leads us to our next question.

2. Who will the Mind Flayer choose to be its new host?

In Season 2, the Mind Flayer chose Will to be its host. After watching the trailer, it’s quite evident that the Mind Flayer is back in Hawkins but this time, Will is not possessed. It seems as if the Mind Flayer has found a new host. Although it’s not clearly stated, it looks as if the Mind Flayer’s new host is Billy, Max’s older brother. If that’s the case, Billy’s voice is the one that is heard throughout the trailer. Only time will tell if this turns out to be true.

3. How did the Mind Flayer return to Hawkins?

In the Season 2 finale, Eleven is able to use her powers to close the gate to the Upside Down, which is how the Mind Flayer infiltrated Hawkins. However, in the final scene of that same episode, the Mind Flayer is still alive, towering over the school. The latest trailer reveals that the Mind Flayer is still in Hawkins. Will poses the idea that the Mind Flayer was locked out of the Upside Down and stayed in Hawkins. How is that possible if Eleven closed the portal?

4. What is the importance of the Starcourt Mall and the Fun Fair?

The teasers and subsequent trailers for Stranger Things have revealed two major locations for Season 3, the Starcourt Mall and the Fun Fair. The Starcourt Mall is the newest addition to the town of Hawkins. In one of the teasers, Steve and a new girl, Robin, work at an ice cream shop inside the mall. However, in the latest trailer, the Starcourt Mall resembles a battleground as the Mind Flayer faces the kids, Hopper, and Joyce. Is this where the final battle will take place?

In addition to the mall, the Fun Fair looks to be a significant location in Season 3. Besides the rides and attractions, there is a man giving a speech to a crowd of people. Is that Mayor Kline? Could it possibly be Martin Brenner, who very well may be alive still?

5. Where do Joyce and Hopper fit into this storyline?

The kids and teenagers are preparing for a fight against the Mind Flayer and its possible demons. However, where do Joyce and Hopper fit into this storyline? In the trailer, Joyce says, “Our kids are in danger.” If previous seasons have taught us anything, Joyce and Hopper will be on the front lines defending their kids from the Upside Down.
