The Hills are alive with the sound of conflict and we’re already obsessed with the return of true reality television royalty.

When it originally aired, The Hills instantly set the bar for reality television. It’s premise was serving as a follow up to the popular series Laguna Beach that depicted the lives of wealthy youth from southern California. When Lauren Conrad moved on to LA, her spin-off series followed and introduced us to several people in the young Hollywood scene that became a reality TV staple and a major influence on pop culture as a whole.

Now, years since the series concluded, many of the cast along with a few new faces have returned for another chapter in their lives now dubbed The Hills: New Beginnings. The sequel series really does have a fitting title given the new direction that their lives have taken and this is only a brief taste of what’s to come.

Many of them are now in their 30’s dealing with marriage, parenthood and the difficulty of navigating their careers through a place that isn’t known for being kind. After just one episode, we have a few things to say about The Hills follow-up and why everyone should be tuning in.

The Hills comeback that we’ve been hoping for

More from Reality TV

The Hills was one of the most entertaining, comedic, sometimes over dramatic reality television series of all times. It has provided us with so many unforgettable moments that are infamously quoted, such as “You know what you did!” or a personal favorite, “This is crazy, how all this is happening while Lauren’s gone.”

Overall, the series brought a fun depiction of Hollywood socialites, and now getting to see them “grown up” is a drastic shift from the attitude they carried in their early 20’s. With that being said, we still have plenty of drama on the way, but there will be unique tonal differences that become more apparent as it progresses. Whether it’s the new decision to integrate confessional interviews or luxurious transitional shots similarly to Siesta Key, The Hills wants to make a comeback while creating a new path for growth.

Stephanie Pratt is the new MVP

Lauren was our initial protagonist on The Hills, later shifting to Kristen Cavallari after her departure. However, it’s Stephanie Pratt who has always remained an underdog for her openness about her personal life. From issues with her family, to hiccups with the law, Stephanie brings a genuine quality to the series that you can’t help but love. Stephanie is one of the rare reality television gifts that can go from making you laugh to bringing heart to a platform that isn’t always perceived as being authentic.

There’s just something extremely unique about our favorite Pratt that brings a well-rounded energy to the cast ambiance. Having her back has already proven that she can carry the series (aimed at being an ensemble) so just keep being you Steph, it’s wonderful to have you back on our screens.

Some things never change

Just like the sun is sure to set, Audrina is a guaranteed to bring boy troubles. From the first episode of the returning series, she gets fairly candid about the tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband and father of her daughter, a major change of pace from her early days on the series.

Audrina is someone who typically brought more surface level conflicts in her youth, but this new side shows some depth to her that makes us root for The Hills star to come out on top. Of course she still is true to herself, so almost immediately the unresolved dynamic of Audrina and Justin Bobby picks right back up and that all too familiar Audrina we know and love is back in the game. The “will she or won’t she” spirit of The Hills has been present from the very beginning so of course we’re oddly and overly invested in what she’ll do next.

Mischa Barton feels like an OG cast member

When The O.C. starlet Mischa Barton was confirmed to join the cast, it caught many off guard seeing as how she has stayed under the radar after several appearances in the press. Joining the cast meant that she would have to share those intimate details of her life which isn’t like Barton, but her introduction shows us parts of herself that we haven’t been privy to until now.

She opens up about the turmoil of her revenge porn incident and publicly discusses her negative press coverage by Perez Hilton, but let’s be honest, who hasn’t he tried to tear down at one point. Even Mischa’s conversation with Stephanie on the beach showed that she’s certainly a personality for television and what that means for future episodes remains to be seen.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s a solid method to potentially re-brand her public image and share her own truth after being spoken for by tabloids. Safe to say she’ll fit right in with the rest of the cast.
