The latest episode of NOS4A2 is more filler than plot, but it introduces us to a strong creative with valuable advice for Vic.

We met the strong creative featured on tonight’s episode of NOS4A2 previously. Her name is Jolene and Manx visited her a while ago to destroy her knife.

Vic meets Jolene while staying at the hospital in a voluntary psych hold. She does so both at the behest of her parents and to poke around in Jolene’s life for intel on Manx.

Blast from the past

There was a time when Charlie Manx wasn’t the despicable child kidnapper we know him to be. Years ago, he was a handsome young man who wanted to get engaged to his then-girlfriend, beautiful waitress Jolene.

Things didn’t go according to plan, and Manx began to change. As all strong creatives must pay a toll as a price for their gifts, Manx gave up his soul.

Jolene’s advice to Vic

Vic helps Jolene avoid her medications. She has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. The audience knows it’s more complicated than that.

Off her meds, Jolene shows Vic her ability. They tamper with the Wraith, and for a moment, Manx is severely weakened. All Jolene did was destroy the car’s engine, and it began his devolution into his true old, weakened self.

It isn’t a permanent fix, but it will slow him down for a while. By showing Vic this, it proves there is a way to kill Manx. If you destroy the Wraith, it will destroy him for good.

Also worth noting is the fact Manx discarded Jolene’s knife, her rollerskates, a while ago. But she can use a wheelchair as a replacement. That means if Vic were ever to lose her dirt bike, it stands to reason she could find an alternative method.

Sadly, Jolene dies after using her abilities one final time. But not before imparting to Vic the importance of her gift. Charlie fears her. She needs to say whatever it takes to get checked out of this place and then take him down once and for all.

The only problem is, Vic might be taking this journey alone. Maggie no longer wants anything to do with Manx after almost dying. She’s terrified of what she saw when Manx showed his face.

She even goes so far as to dispose of her Scrabble tiles. I doubt this will last, Maggie seems too important to check out now, but it does raise the stakes. Is there any way Vic can do this on her own?

Overall, this was a clear filler episode. We didn’t necessarily need to know Jolene’s backstory, but it also gave Vic the final push to inch closer to the final battle against Charlie Manx.

A new episode of NOS4A2 premieres July 14 at 10/9c on AMC.
