SDCC 2019: The Russo brothers answer “fan questions” from the Avengers
The Russo brothers took the stage in Hall H during SDCC 2019 and were surprised with video “fan questions” from the Avengers themselves!
Joe and Anthony Russo shared fun trivia during their SDCC 2019 panel about shooting Avengers: Endgame, like how Ruffalo and Mackie were most likely to ruin a scene, that the hardest VFX shot was all of the portals opening in the final battle, and how Smart Hulk was one of the most challenging characters to visually get right.
They also shared an emotional story about how Robert Downey Jr.’s last day of filming was his “I am Ironman” line at the end of the battle scene, and that it was extra emotional for RDJ because his first screen-test for Ironman was in the soundstage next-door to the Endgame battle set.
The Avengers ask the Russo brothers fan questions
One of the most fun moments of the panel was a “fan question” sequence where the questions — all previously submitted videos — were sent in by some very popular Avengers: Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, and Robert Downey Jr.

Ruffalo was interested to know who was now the smartest Avenger, and after some cheers in the audience for several different characters, the clear choice in Hall H was for Shuri. Chris Evans had a very interesting question about what Captain America first did AFTER successfully getting back to Peggy. They had a few thoughts on the matter: “trying to make a baby,” rescue Bucky from Hydra, go find himself in the ice, or possibly even figure out a “rotation schedule” where the two Steves can take turns in their separate lives.
Chris Hemsworth didn’t quite ask a question, but rather just put a good word in with Hall H that Thor was the obvious choice to be the leader of the Guardians (Quill who?) — which makes us excited for the future of Thor, and Paul Rudd brought some added humor by asking who the sexiest Paul in the MCU was (Chrises step aside), and which Chris had the best “America’s Ass”. The Russos called out all four Chrises names, and Evans got the most cheers by far.
Finally, Robert Downey Jr. asked how much Tony had changed from the time he said “I am Ironman” in the press conference to when he repeated the line at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
The Russo brothers spoke on how now that Tony’s a father, he’s been changed and was absolutely in a different place, now as a father whose job in the universe is to serve others. In his mind, Tony Stark was absolutely in a different place when he said “I am Ironman” at the end of Endgame versus when he said it at the press conference.
