Marvel Studios announced that an animated series of the alternate reality comic series, titled What if…?, will be coming to Disney+.

Marvel unveiled an impressive lineup at San Diego Comic-Con as a part of their Phase 4 plans. Besides the highly anticipated Marvel sequels and the Blade reboot, there were several TV shows scheduled to be released on Disney’s new streaming platform, Disney+. The animated series What if…? is one of the stand-out developments to come from Marvel.

The What if…? comic series the show will be based on started in the 70s, has hundreds of comics to date, and followed a Twilight Zone format of storytelling.

Each story is based off a scenario already told in other comics but with a twist. And the resemblance to the Twilight Zone doesn’t stop there; the comic even had a narrator for some time.

The series provided answers to alternative fates for superheroes and the world by modifying the stories and the consequences. What would have happened if Peter Parker never had become a crime fighter? He would have become an entertainer, and New York City would have suffered for it according to What if…? comic issue #19.

Marvel’s What if…? will have Jeffrey Wright as the narrator and the voice of alien Uatu the Watcher. Wright is best known for his starring role in Westworld and has a smooth voice that would be amazing for narration.

As reported by Collider, Wright talked about his character at the SDCC panel:

"“The Watcher is a non-Earthly being who observes all things. He’s watching over the multiverse and occasionally may nor may not intervene with the doings of earthlings, other than that he’s off doing his own things.”"

As for the rest of the cast, the voices of Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, and others from the Marvel movies will be featured as their MCU characters.

Kevin Feige also teased the first episode, and it’s titled “What if Peggy Carter was the one who became a super soldier?” In which, Peggy is the one that gets the super-soldier serum, and Steve Rogers aka Captain America remains a mediocre man that joins the fight using a suit constructed by Howard Stark.

The fun part about the show is that there are hundreds of comics that can be used and so many alternate realities to be explore. We will get to see how things would have turned out if villains had decided to be heroes and if certain heroes had never died. Just remember that for every story change that takes place, the consequences may turn out to be more the we bargained for.
