SDCC 2019 featured quite a few presentations this past weekend so it was easy to overlook some panels, including the introduction of Netflix’s animated series Seis Manos. Here’s a breakdown of everything we learned from the panel if you did miss it.

Despite losing their sect of Marvel heroes in 2018, Netflix has partnered with Viz Media to develop an original superhero series of its’ own — one that could turn into an animated superhero universe at some point. Seis Manos, the Latino kung-fu series in question, features a trio of orphaned martial artists who join forces with a DEA agent and a Mexican Federale to take down a drug cartel.

After their mentor is brutally slaughtered by assassins tied to the cartel, his disciples set out to avenge his murder. At the same time, they plan on ridding the area of these criminals because of the civilian casualties levied on the nearby towns.

As far as the SDCC panel goes, Urian Brown, a representative from Viz Media moderated the Q&A portion. Brown was also joined by the series co-creator Alvaro Rodriguez and writer Daniel Dominguez.

More from Netflix

In addition to production, the panel also included the actors who’d be bringing the cast of Seis Manos to life. That included Jonny Cruz, Angelica Vale, Mike Colter, Danny Trejo, and Vic Chao. Fans were most interested in Colter’s character seeing as how he’s no stranger to superhero shows — a Netflix one to be precise. Keep in mind that Colter’s new character is way more badass than the last one he portrayed.

In terms of characters, Cruz is voicing one of the young martial artists known as Jesus. Aislinn Derbez is portraying another martial artist named Isabella. And the last member of their group is Silencio, who for obvious reasons, doesn’t have a voice actor attached.

The trio of martial artists are trained by Master Chiu, voiced by Vic Chao. The last remaining cast members of Seis Manos’ cast are comprised of Brister, El Balde, and Garcia. Brister (Colter) is a DEA Agent who partners with Federale Garcia (Vale) while in pursuit of El Balde (Trejo), the drug-cartel kingpin wreaking havoc on the fictional town of San Simon.

As far as tone goes, the cast and crew present for Seis Manos also emphasized that the animated series would be extremely brutal and violent. A clip featured alongside the series’ promotional launch shows the trio of martial artists literally dismantling a clan of demonic creatures.

Isabella can be seen slashing them to bits with impromptu knives while Jesus uses his weight to throw them around like ragdolls. Silencio isn’t at the forefront of the fight but he’s in the background, providing equal assistance against the demonic threat.

The other thing that the cast pointed out was there’d be a fair amount of Mexican mysticism thrown in. Supernatural elements are clearly present in the preview clip released, so we’ll undoubtedly witness more mystic creatures and supernatural incidents on Seis Manos.

Lastly, Graeber made it abundantly clear that Seis Manos would indeed have a From Dusk Till Dawn vibe to it. The nightmarish creatures shown in the clip are evidenced to this, though it’s still to be determined if the same rules apply to all the supernatural creatures introduced that did to the vampires in Robert Rodriguez’s classic film.
