If Supernatural were to end with the current plans. Jared Padalecki talks that and more during his interview at SDCC 2019.

We’re all wondering what’s going to happen at the end of Supernatural. We all have hopes and wants, but we won’t necessarily get them in the final episode. However, if the show was to end with the currently planned ending, Jared Padalecki shares that he would be happy with it.

Padalecki shared about it during a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. He wouldn’t divulge what the current plans are, but did admit that it’s an ending that he likes. He’s spoken before about the only way the show could really go out is if one or both brothers died, but will that actually happen to wrap up the series? Is there hope for happiness for the two?

However, there’s no guarantee that the ending currently planned is the one that we’ll get. If it doesn’t happen, I do hope we get to find out what this mysterious ending will be. Padalecki shared that he hopes the current ending sticks, even though the filming has only just wrapped on the first episode in production (fourth episode of the season).

"“I am satisfied with the current ending. In all fairness, I think every 14 seasons, the ending that was the idea in Episode 1 is not what happened in Episode 22…What’s the great quote? ‘Man plans, God laughs.’ So, I love the ending. I hope it is how we finish off this series, but it changes, you know?”"

There’s time for things to change. And things really do change. During the interview, the actor best known to us as Sam Winchester shared that the ending to every season, even the very first season, wasn’t the original plan. He didn’t divulge further, so it would be interesting to know what the original ending for the first season was going to be. We do know that the pilot episode was originally going to end with John Winchester dying on the ceiling, which certainly would have changed the whole series.

It’s not surprising that changes can happen. As the writing continues, newer smaller plots are developed. They need to be handled with but they can also lead to fresh and exciting ideas. It can also depend on how the fans take to characters. While Padalecki mentioned his wife, Genevieve, was only supposed to be in about four episodes of the series but ended up being in more, we know that Misha Collins was only supposed to be in a few episodes. Anna was supposed to be the angel to the brothers, but fans took to Collins instantly.

The SDCC interview with Jared Padalecki continued onto other topics, including where Sam’s headspace is right now in the show, which version of Sam was the most challenging for the actor, and whether there are plans to bring Genevieve Padalecki back onto the show.
