Chyler Leigh and Azie Tesfai had plenty to share about the upcoming fifth season of Supergirl at San Diego Comic-Con. Here are our top five takeaways!

Season 4 of Supergirl brought with it a lot of changes both in the lives of our favorite characters and the dynamics between them. From the arrival of new faces, shifts in relationships and new (and old) threats to overcome, the writers proved willing to take countless risks in furthering our favorite characters’ journeys.

It’s a trend that will continue in Season 5, which promises to keep the momentum going in exciting new ways! From surprise character departures and arrivals to the further exploration of the series friendships, romances and rivalries!

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event, Hidden Remote caught up with Supergirl stars Chyler Leigh and Azie Tesfai in a roundtable style setting to discuss the upcoming fifth season. During our conversation, the duo revealed a lot of juicy details about Season 5 – none more juicier than these five takeaways!

1. Jeremy Jordan’s return will feature an unexpected and fun twist

As announced prior to Supergirl‘s Comic-Con appearance, orignal star Jeremy Jordan will finally be making his way back to National City in Season 5. Having last appeared in Season 3, Winn’s farewell arc saw his character travel to the future with Mon-El in order to fight by the Legion’s side.

Although we’ll have to wait to see just what brings Winn back to town, Leigh promises the storyline will feature an unexpected and fun twist.

"“Jeremy [Jordan]’s coming back again, which makes me so incredibly happy. His energy and his presence just on set [is always wonderful], let alone the fact that he’s just a phenomenal actor and someone that I truly deeply respect,” Leigh previewed before teasing just how Jordan may make his way back to National City. “[Jeremy returns] with a really great twist of storyline, so it’s going to be super cool to seeing to see that.”"

2. James’ farewell storyline will see him confront some big life choices… and Kelly will be there to lend a helping hand.

As one original Supergirl cast member makes his triumphant return, another is preparing to leave National City. Season 5 will bid farewell to series regard Mehcad Brooks, who has announced he will be leaving the show this season.

Although it will be bittersweet to bid farewell to Brooks, Leigh previewed that the writers do a wonderful job handling James’ exit storyline.

"“He’s got a lovely storyline to in the beginning, that kind of makes a lot of sense and does a lot of justice to where James is going and why,” Leigh previewed of what’s to come from Brooks’ farewell arc."

While the exact details surrounding James’ departure, remain uncertain, Season 5 will force James to make several difficult decisions. Fortunately, Kelly will be there to guide him in the right direction.

"“With Mehcad leaving, James has some big life choices to make. And [Kelly]’s very much there to guide him. She’s like the firm loving hand with both Alex and James,” Tesfai teased of the role Kelly will play in James’ farewell arc."

3. Season 5 will draw inspiration from a Netflix hit

After shining a light on immigration and racial tensions with its powerful fourth season, Supergirl will shift its focus onto technology this season and the role it plays in our society. In doing so, the writers are looking to take a page from another buzzy series: Netflix’s Black Mirror.

"“[Season 5] plays on the idea of high-tech, sci-fi and all these cool things that we think help us [which] may tend to backfire, like monitoring,” Tesfai previewed. “So there’s something really cool that’s happening. [The season is] very Black Mirror esque.”"

4. This year’s crossover is going to be absolutely game-changing

The Arrowverse is no stranger to crossover events, but this year The CW is swinging for the fences with its most ambitious crossover event yet. Not only will there be a gradual build up to the event, but the events of the crossover will change the world as our characters know it.

"“The crossover is like bananas! I’m still trying to get answers for that, so I have nothing to give you other than wow!” Leigh admitted in discussing this fall’s Crisis on Infinite Earth’s crossover event.  “It’s kind of like this slow lead up to it and then all hell breaks loose. Afterwards, there are things that change the dynamics. The world changes; everything changes. So then it’s kind of like, okay, where do we go from here?”"

5. Kelly will begin a new career venture… which could put her in serious danger

Now that Tesfai is set to stick around as one of Supergirl‘s new series regulars, fans can expect Kelly to put down roots and establish herself within National City. As such, Kelly will embark on a new career venture; a venture which could land Kelly in hot water as the season progresses!

"“There’s a new character coming in played by [Julie Gonzalo] named Andrea Rojas and I’m going to be running her new company, which is called Obsidian Tech,” Tesfai previewed of what Season 5 holds for Kelly. “Not only am I gonna have this awesome new job, but the job that I have and this new character is going to put Kelly in huge danger later on in the year.”"
