Worried about the ending to Supernatural? Bob Berens spoke about resolving the storylines for the series, comparing that difficulty to Game of Thrones.

I don’t think we have to worry too much about storylines being resolved in Supernatural’s final season. Bob Berens spoke about wrapping up the storylines of the main characters while at SDCC 2019, comparing it to wrapping up storylines on Game of Thrones.

Whether you’ve watched Game of Thrones or not, you’ve likely heard of the mixed opinions about the final season. With six episodes, there was a lot to resolve and some felt short-changed with the series finale. It led to fears that this could happen with other shows coming to an end soon, mainly Supernatural.

Berens shared that he doesn’t envision the wrap-up to be as hard on the series as it was for the Game of Thrones creators, and it all comes down to the smaller cast. With the HBO series, there were at least 10 main characters that needed their storylines wrapped, whether it was to fulfill redemption arcs, tell the story of the White Walkers vs. Westeros, or even the battle for the Iron Throne.

Supernatural has a handful of characters that will need their storylines resolved. Sam and Dean will certainly come to mind for everyone, but Castiel and Jack have also become important characters in the series. Whether it’s a good or bittersweet resolve, these are the four characters that need it the most.

"“It’s a lot of conversations in the room about where we want to leave these characters and also what we owe the audience…Truthfully, I feel like there’s kind of a road map that seems to be making sense for us as a collective.“I don’t think this show is as hard to resolve as Game of Thrones, where you’re paying off like 50 characters or 60 characters that people have investment in. I think, at it’s core, making sure we end powerfully and meaningfully the stories of Jack, Cass, Sam, and Dean and honor them and their characters’ emotions and the audience’s emotions…That’s our North Star.”"

There are the Wayward Sisters characters too. This could just take an episode to wrap up the storyline that has been left dangling after The CW failed to see the potential success the series could have due to a lack of realization what a spin-off is actually meant to be. (i.e. a spin-off shouldn’t involve Sam and Dean unless a prequel series, so the lack of Sam and Dean really shouldn’t matter!)

Berens did speak about the Wayward Sisters. Right now, there are no concrete plans to include them, but he and others believe that something needs to be done to tie up those loose ends. For the quality of the story, I fully agree. Whether some fans like it or not, good writers wouldn’t allow a fairly big storyline to be left so open.
