2019 is poised to become one of the best years for LGBT characters in the history of television.

Even if you haven’t seen Gentleman Jack, Euphoria, or Tales of the City, you’ve likely seen a handful of gay main characters and maybe a trans woman on your screen and that is something that has never happened on this scale. Not only are there more LGBT TV characters on small screens this year, but many are also written with much more care than the gays of years past.

Several big TV shows with LGBT characters of color have aired this year including Euphoria, Vida, and Pose, among others. Gay content that doesn’t involve death or rote tropes is no longer completely impossible to find. There is still a very long way to go, but major strides have been made in representation that will hopefully start a ripple effect in the following months and years.

More from Entertainment

Yes, we had to endure the infuriating queerbaiting techniques of Killing Eve this year (just gals being pals), but we also got to witness the delightful unapologetic lesbian swagger of 1800s Anne Lister and a 1960s trans coming of age story told over an entire episode dedicated to Jen Richards’ young Anna Madrigal.

One Day at a Time was renewed after the show was canceled by Netflix, giving us more positive lesbian and nonbinary representation in a family sitcom. And against all odds, something no one expected and many of us didn’t even want, The L Word is coming back this fall. Fellow gays, Twenty gay-teen may not have fulfilled its promises, but 2019 may just be our year.

Here are 10 of the best LGBT shows of the year so far.
