Watch the Angry Birds Movie 2: Now playing in theaters
Have you been eagerly awaiting the return of the cinematic Angry Birds universe? Be excited because the Angry Birds Movie 2 is now available in theaters nationwide.
The Angry Birds Movie premiered in theaters on May 20, 2016 and surprised a lot of movie-goers with its stunning animation, hilarious hijinks, and generally favorable reviews. The films are based on the popular cellphone game “Angry Birds” by Rovio Entertainment, which gained extreme popularity in the mid-2000s.
Rovio’s first film based on the franchise also seemed to do well, grossing over $107 million domestically and around $350 million worldwide. Since the film was made by Columbia Pictures on only a $73 million budget, these returns on the project definitely provided evidence that a sequel would be warranted for the film.

The original film follows three main birds: Red, Chuck, and Bomb (voiced by Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, and Danny McBride. Much of the film is dedicated to showing why the birds are now so angry, having originally been happy birds living alone on their island. When a group of evil green pigs arrives, the birds are forced to reckon with the invading hogs. The voice-cast for the original also boasted the likes of Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Keegan-Michael Key, Sean Penn, Kate McKinnon, and Hannibal Buress.
Make sure you watch the original before this new film! While it may seem to be predominately geared at children, the film actually does play well for adults. It features plenty of adult-level humor and enough colors and hilarity to keep children entertained.
In the new sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2, we find the same characters now joined up with the green pigs from the original to fight some very aggressive birds on an ice-covered island. It seems to promise loads of new fun, brilliant animated sequences, and quality additions to the voice cast from the first film. Now joining Sudeikis and the others are Leslie Jones, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown, and Rachel Bloom. The new film also features a relatively new face to the director’s chair, a storyboard artist named Thurop Van Orman.
So far, reviews have been fairly positive, with many calling the film better than the original. As of this writing, the film features a fresh score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 51 reviews counting. It’s safe to say the movie will end up being certified fresh on the tomato scale and a solid film for the family as summer draws to an end.
