Watch the new trailer for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance hits Netflix on August 30. The prequel series is stunning new and old fans already with its mesmerizing trailers.

When I heard the news of a new The Dark Crystal story, I immediately had a flashback. There I am with my jelly bracelets, sitting on the floor with my little brother eating some snack while becoming a dedicated forever fan of this film that has still never had an equal. My path to film and TV love was still in early bloom.

Honestly, I had doubts. How many times have we heard that this movie or that show was going to have a reboot or continuation and then found out it was nothing like what we pictured? Sometimes that’s a good thing, but I feel like almost always, it’s a letdown.

“What are they thinking,” I wondered? How dare someone venture into this world of perfect, epic glory, and expect to improve, or even duplicate the adventure of my youth this way? I was scared, certain that my epic childhood was about to be dishonored one way or another.

But then, the trailers. Now that Netflix is about to release The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the final trailer has arrived and there is a lot of talk about what we can expect. Apprehensive, I started learning more and quickly found myself a bit more willing to be a supporter.

Learning that they strayed from CG as the main idea in favor of the original puppetry methods was a huge thrill. But once I saw it with my own eyes, well, I’m a believer. Have a peek:

Yep, now I’m like, “Um, I love this thing.” I can’t believe how much it mimics the original visuals, movements, and characters. We even catch a look at the retelling of the old story (which is actually later since this is a prequel situation) in a new light. And yes, these are the puppets I know and love! I’m captured.

Let the record show that I’ve not only dropped my sword, but I am in full support of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Personally, I am counting the days until this prequel series releases on Netflix, and the end of August can’t get here fast enough for me.

While this is technically taking place 1,000 years before the Skeksis went essence robbing, the trailers indicate that there will be at least some glimpse of what we know from the other film. However, according to Louis Letterier, the director of this masterpiece, this story can easily be a standalone. So no need to panic about checking out the original, ICYMI.

Although, if you are interested in watching the classic before you embark on this adventurous 10-episode series, you can stream it on demand basically anywhere right now. Yes, I will be doing that (again), myself. Woohoo!

You will find that the trailer gives us a hint of Avatar to blend with our classic “Jim Henson dark muppet” feel we fell in love with all those years ago. And if you haven’t yet, you will. I also really loved the opportunity to hear the voice work. The talent and endurance involved in mastering that craft is immense and particular.

We’re getting a massive dose of acting talent including the likes of Helena Bonham-Carter, Sigourney Weaver, Taron Egerton, Mark Hamill, and Lena Headey – only to mention a very few of the many recognizable names in this stunner. Mark my words, there will be awards.

I don’t know about you, but I’m really looking forward to this. Thankfully, it’s coming out right on Netflix and I can enjoy it just as I did before – in my living room. I plan to invite my kids, too, so they can have their very own, modernized Dark Crystal experience to carry through their years. This is gonna be great!
