Episode 3 of CW’s new horror series Two Sentence Horror Stories puts domestic violence front and center, even after death.

We are three episodes in and loving Two Sentence Horror Stories! The series does more than give us chills, it also clearly has a mission and purpose. And one of those is to highlight real life issues to raise awareness.

The first week, we witnessed harassment in the workplace, as well as mental illness. Week two focuses on the long effects of growing up in a violent environment and immigration. Season 1, Episode 3, “Legacy,” centers around two families forced to live through domestic violence, while the fourth episode, “Hide,” tackled the injustice in our current immigration laws. We’ll break down “Legacy” first and “Hide” in another article.

Warning! Spoilers are ahead if you missed tonight’s episode of Two Sentence Horror Stories!

The episode begins with a mother mourning the recent loss of her son. Also mourning, but more afraid than anything else, is her daughter-in-law. There’s a young boy running around the home, but he doesn’t appear to be noticed by the women. If you’re playing close attention (or are a horror movie/series expert), you quickly guess the boy is also a ghost.

He isn’t the only ghost in that house, though, and the other isn’t nearly as friendly. The second ghost is a creepy-looking (but funny at the same time) ghost that haunts his wife Angela (Kim Wong). First, he attempts to strangle her, then he pulls her out of bed, and in the final scene he gives her a beating. What an angry ghost!

We learn that he used to be abusive, especially when he was drunk. And, apparently, still is. His mother later confesses she has always know about this, but was afraid to say anything. She adds that her own husband was abusive and that’s why her son is so angry.

Okay, valid point. It can be a behavior one picks up, and I can only imagine the resentment, but it shouldn’t be an excuse. This man is able to break the cycle. Not to mention, he’s dead! Move on to the other side already!

Once the mother reveals all of this and tells her ghost son that the abuse must stop, we learn the young boy is also the man. They are both a separate version of him: they young boy is the innocence and the other is the evil self. The two hold hands and let go of the anger. He has finally moved on. Or has he?

In the final moments of the episode, Angela and her mother-in-law pack up and leave the house, deciding to move on with their lives as well. Watching them both from the window, however, is the husband, who cries and begs for them not to leave him alone. It appears he’ll be haunting the residents who move in next, doesn’t it?
