The CW has been teasing Batwoman for months. Now the series star, Ruby Rose, is dropping hints about what to expect. Let’s break down five key details from her interview with Entertainment Tonight.

DC superhero dramas occupy prime real estate in The CW lineup. Show producer Greg Berlanti has a knack for bringing these stories to life. Batwoman, starring Ruby Rose, is the newest addition to the roster of Berlanti shows on The CW.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight (video at the bottom), Rose spoke candidly about what it is like to suit up as Batman’s cousin. Now, let’s break down five major details Ruby Rose revealed to fans.

1. Ruby Rose is the first actor to portray Batwoman

Numerous comic book heroes have popped up in films and television shows over the years. In some cases, multiple actors have played different versions of the same character in various television and film adaptations.

For example, Batman has been played by eight different actors on the big screen, and Robert Pattinson will be the ninth. In addition, a young Bruce Wayne—the future Caped Crusader—is depicted in FOX’s Batman origin series, Gotham. Ruby Rose points out that she is originating the live-action Batwoman character.

What does this mean for the show?

Rose says it’s “fun when you get to build a character from the ground up.” She will start from square one with Batwoman, with plenty of comic book material for inspiration and the freedom to set the tone for the show.

2. Batwoman breaks ground as the first openly lesbian TV superhero lead

The Batwoman character is touted as the first openly lesbian lead on a superhero show. But Berlanti’s Arrowverse, as well as Black Lightning, have explored LGBTQ supporting characters throughout the years. Judging by the significance of gay characters in his other shows, Berlanti’s rookie series Batwoman will go all-in.

How will this affect the narrative?

“This is a show that I wish existed when I was young”, Rose reflects. But, Rose feels no extra pressure when it comes to taking on this role. She says, “It’s not a ‘gay show’.” Although the lead character is a lesbian, Rose emphasizes the diversity of the Batwoman cast.

3. Batwoman will play a part in this season’s Arrowverse crossover event

This season, the sixth annual Arrowverse crossover event will begin with Supergirl on Dec. 8 and finish with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on Jan. 14. Batwoman, The Flash, and Arrow will all air crossover episodes as well. This will mark the final crossover event for Arrow, which is entering its last season, and the first one for freshman series Batwoman.

What does this mean for Batwoman’s future in the Arrowverse?

The “Comics Come to Life Sizzle” trailer below indicates that the Arrowverse still has a lot of life left. When it comes to daring characters, Batwoman just may pick up where Arrow leaves off.

4. Batwoman actors perform stunts

Ruby Rose has a background in boxing and is comfortable with the physicality that is necessary for her role. Rose recalls intense on-set stunt performances in which she was required to execute nearly 50 movements designed by the stunt coordinator.

How will this affect the show’s action sequences?

Rose’s background in boxing will lend authenticity to the action scenes. Sure, trained stunt professionals will likely be hired for any extremely dangerous moves. But, if Batwoman follows suit with Arrow and other Berlanti shows, producers won’t rely too heavily on stunt performers.

If this is the case, the show will likely avoid excessive cutaways, wide shots, dim lighting, or obscured faces during fight scenes. Instead, fans can expect lots of close-up, realistic action.

5. Ruby Rose oozes enthusiasm for the show

“It’s wild! It’s really good!”, Rose beams about Batwoman. For more in-depth details straight from Ruby Rose, watch the full interview above.
