Legacies: Will Matt Donovan be back for Season 2?

Legacies is set to return soon and apparently, there is a new sheriff in town according to recent casting news. So what happened to Matt Donovan?

When Legacies was first being teased on The CW, Matt Donovan returning as the Mystic Falls sheriff was a pretty big deal. Fans of The Vampire Diaries were hoping to see as many connections to the parent series as possible. Many looked forward to seeing Matt pop up throughout the season.

Sadly for Matt fans, Zach Roerig only appeared in two episodes of the show. He had little to do and didn’t appear to have a story arc. That said, the door appeared open for him to return in the future when Roerig’s schedule allowed.

At least, until now. TVLine reports a new sheriff has been cast. Bianca Kajlich (Bosch) has been cast as Sheriff Mac. The article reports she has a troubled past but “she’s willing to open herself up to a new romance when the opportunity arises.”

Does that mean we can expect her to be romanced by one of the adults in town, perhaps by Alaric?

Sheriff Mac isn’t moving to Mystic Falls alone. She’ll be bringing her kids with her. Ethan (Leo Howard from Why Women Kill), her son, sounds suspiciously like a Matt Donovan expy, described as a “good-hearted athlete.”

Funnily enough, Ethan’s sister, Maya, played by Bianca Santos (The Fosters) is described as a flirtatious troublemaker. That also sounds familiar. Vicki Donovan, anyone?

Curiously, both Maya and her brother will develop romantic feelings for Hope. That should make for an exciting love triangle for a change. And with two women vying for Hope’s affections (lest we forget #Hosie shippers), can we potentially assume Hope is not heterosexual?

Landon/Hope fans better brace themselves for the upcoming season. It looks like the romantic turmoil of Legacies is just getting started.

As for Matt Donovan, it looks like we’ve seen the last of him for now. Perhaps the series will explain what happened to him. After all these years of being the sole human surrounded by supernaturals, no one would blame him for packing up and getting the heck out of dodge.

The fact Roerig has been cast in the upcoming USA series, Dare Me, may also have something to do with it.
