Ready to return to Cloud 9? Before Superstore Season 5 premieres, here’s the lowdown on guest stars, Mateo’s future, and Amy and Jonah’s relationship.

The new season of Superstore has everything: romance, drama, laughs, and robots threatening to steal the jobs of Cloud 9’s best (and worst) employees. Season 5 picks up where the intense season finale left off, with Mateo getting hauled away from his friends and livelihood by ICE and Amy putting on her game face to fight back against corporate with a fierce unionization.

While they’re still fighting the good fight of their strike in Season 2, the fifth season will also find Superstore operating under new management and welcoming a new crop of guest stars, one of which has a connection to Ugly Betty. Who’s dropping by Cloud 9? What’s next for Mateo? And will Amy and Jonah finally take the next step?

Here’s everything to expect from Season 5 — so far.

Who’s guest starring?

Season 5 will host another special Ugly Betty reunion and welcome One Day at a Time star Justina Machado as Maya, Cloud 9’s new district manager. Maya faces off with Amy amid her continued efforts to unionize and support workers’ rights. According to TV Line, Amy shares a connection to Maya that will force Amy to think about her future, and that includes Jonah.

Saturday Night Live cast member Heidi Gardner will also appear in Season 5 as Colleen, Dina’s nemesis who now works in the same store after an unlikely transfer. Gardner’s character plays a large part in an episode that’s penned by series star Colton Dunn and focuses on Dina and Garrett’s feud in the aftermath of last season’s bird-gate.

Who are the new showrunners and series regulars?

Following the conclusion of Season 4, Superstore creator Justin Spitzer stepped down as showrunner due to his new overall deal with Universal Television. However, the behind the scenes shuffle shouldn’t be cause for concern for fans, as series executive producers Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green have been appointed the new bosses of the sitcom moving forward.

Also, Superstore’s cast has remained unchanged for its first four seasons, but in Season 5 (which will just miss 100 episodes unless NBC ups the order to 23 episodes), get ready for more Sandra. Kaliko Kauahi, who has recurred since Season 1, has been added as a series regular in time for Sandra’s upcoming wedding to her secret boyfriend Jerry and further rivalry with Carol.

Will Mateo come back to Cloud 9?

In the Season 4 finale, Cloud 9 was raided by ICE and picked up Mateo because of his undocumented status. Superstore picks up with Mateo in a detention facility, with hopes of getting out on bond, and his family scrambling to hire an immigration lawyer. Mateo’s Cloud 9 family does everything they can to ensure his safe return to their big-box home.

What’s going on with Amy and Jonah?

Beyond Amy beginning to think of her future thanks to Maya, she will continue to play both sides with corporate as she moves full steam ahead on the formation of a workers’ union to protect herself and her employees. However, America Ferrera and Ben Feldman hinted at Comic-Con that Season 5 would move the needle forward for the comedy’s central couple and their relationship would “get somewhere.”
