Will Umbrella Academy Season 2 introduce some of the other 36 kids?
By Rachel Roth
New cast details for The Umbrella Academy suggest that Season 2 might introduce the other 36 kids born on October 1, 1989.
If you’re like me then you’re probably tired of waiting for the second season of The Umbrella Academy to finally come out. The superhero series based on the comic of the same name, premiered on Netflix early this year on Feb. 15 and became a mega-hit before the month was even over. Starring Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher the series was renewed in April for another 10 episodes with production on Season 2 currently underway.
Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is about the seven Hargreeves children adopted by eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves after 43 unpregnant women miraculously give birth on the same day of October 1, 1989, to children with superhuman abilities. He takes them in to form The Umbrella Academy, a superhero group trained to one day save the world.

After years of being estranged, the siblings are brought back together after their father’s mysterious death, forced to work together to not only find out what happened to him but to also save the world. Season 1 ended with the Hargreeves children successfully traveling back in time to stop their sister Vanya from starting the Apocalypse, resetting their timeline to fix the damage done to their family.
Not a lot of information about Season 2 has been released other than the news that Justin Min who played Ben “Number 6” will be a series regular and that the show’s location scout was searching for rural farms to film in. Now, we might have reason to believe that some of the other 36 unadopted children will be making an appearance.
Other superhumans out there
One of the biggest mysteries of The Umbrella Academy is that of the miracle births of the 43 children born on October 1, 1989. The event is never mentioned again as if 43 Virgin Mary’s popping out babies happens all the time. Another question floating around, also never answered, is what the heck happened to those children not adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves?
Some of the Academy kids had some incredible powers such as seeing/controlling the dead and having an otherworldly monster living inside of them. Imagine what some of the other kids could do.
The question of whatever happened to the other 36 was finally answered in the third series of “The Umbrella Academy” comics, “Hotel Oblivion.” The series is seven issues long and features Vanya going to Norway where she encounters what is basically a better version of her family, seven more of the original 43 that have formed a team (that can all fly by the way) of their own and also go by numbers.
There’s been no word on what will happen in Season 2, but three new cast members have been added as series regulars with vague but intriguing character descriptions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actors Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood and Marin Ireland have joined the cast.
Arya will play Lilia, an unpredictable a “chameleon” who can be as brilliant or as clinically insane as the situation requires. Unpredictable, mischievous and sarcastic, she is gifted with a twisted sense of humor. Yusuf will play Raymond, a smart and confident leader, possessing the innate ability to disarm you with a look, and Ireland will play Sissy, a Texas mom who married young for all of the wrong reasons.
These descriptions are all vague and none actually say “power” but the way there worded raises eyebrows. “Chameleon” could mean someone who can simply blend in with the crowd or any social situation like a spy, but it could also mean a literal chameleon power. Gatewood’s character of Raymond described as having “ability to disarm you with a single look” is a strange way to say he’s super charming.
Could these strange “gifts” be abilities? If so then these are certainly strange abilities to have, but their personality descriptions seem to parallel some of the Hargreeves. Someone who married for the wrong reasons like Alison, a charming guy that’s a natural-born leader like Diego and a wild card that can adapt to anything, like Klaus.
The Umbrella Academy Season 2 has yet to be given a release date or synopsis.
