This next movie is for those of us who have Netflix or that prefer Netflix over Hulu. Last year, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was getting a ton of hype. Deservedly so as it was a great book-to-movie adaptation. That wasn’t the only book-to-movie adaptation that Netflix produced that deserves high praise. The company also produced Dumplin’ which was less of a traditional love story and more about a girl accepting herself for who she is.
Featuring Jennifer Aniston in a lead role, Dumplin’ was such an underrated gem. The film follows Willowdean or Dumplin’ as she is called by her mother as she enters a beauty pageant to try to buck the stereotypes associated with them.
Throughout the film, you watch her grow from being a shy and insecure girl into a confident and self-assured young lady. By the end of the movie, you and your friends will be loving Willowdean.
What makes this film so fun is that the soundtrack is almost entirely made up of Dolly Parton songs. Parton even wrote a song for the film and re-recorded a few for the album. If you and your friends love Dolly Parton, you’re in for a treat. The film isn’t just about self-acceptance though as there’s also moments of friendship, romance and even, drag queens. Probably weren’t expecting that for girls night but Dumplin’ has it all.
