6. The Fifth Element

Original Release Date: May 9, 1997

Box Office Earnings: The Fifth Element was a pretty big sci-fi hit. With a large budget of $90 million, the movie went on to gross $263.9 million at the box office. It sounded like a risky project to begin with, but obviously the risk paid off big time!

Critical Acclaim: Although The Fifth Element seems like a film you’re either going to love or hate, most critics fell on the “love” side, with the film holding a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus that the film is “visually inventive and gleefully over the top.”

About the Role: Bruce Willis stars as taxicab driver Korben Dallas, who suddenly finds himself on a mission to save the planet when a strange young woman falls into his cab. Together, the two attempt to recover four mystical stones that are essential for defending Earth against a deadly cosmic threat.

Simply the Best: Although Bruce Willis the Action Star gets more attention, I think Bruce Willis the sci-fi star is equally as impressive. I always expect Willis’s gruffness to collide with more fantastical sci-fi premises, and yet he fits in great. He’s a solid anchor to a completely bonkers movie filled with some of the craziest characters you’ve ever seen.
