3. Looper

Original Release Date: September 28, 2012

Box Office Earnings: Before Rian Johnson was causing controversy with his Star Wars movie, he was making movies like Looper! The clever Sci-Fi film that earned close to $180 million off a $30 million budget. And looking at the movie, it’s pretty amazing that it came in at only $30 million. Johnson sure knows how to stretch a dollar.

Critical Acclaim: A critical darling, Looper earned a stunning 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Which is amazing for a modern sci-fi film. The critical consensus sings the movie’s praises by saying “as thought-provoking as it is thrilling, Looper delivers an uncommonly smart, bravely original blend of futuristic sci-fi and good old-fashioned action.”

About the Role: How to even begin explaining this film? It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a contract killer who terminates victims that criminal syndicates send back from the future. But Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s next target? His future self, played by Bruce Willis.

Simply the Best: Looper is hands down one of the best sci-fi pictures to come out this decade. And really, it’s a treat because you get to see two Bruce Willis performances. Meaning the actual Bruce Willis, but also Joseph Gordon-Levitt who gives a really solid Bruce Willis impersonation. Double the Bruce Willis means double the awesome!
