Frank Whaley may play an old and sleazy business man in Hustlers, but before that he was a night-in-shining-armor in some prime romantic comedies.

It’s not hard to hate Frank Whaley’s character as the total scumbag of Wall Street in Lorene Scafaria’s new film, Hustlers. Whaley’s character, Reese, is anything but charming. He’s mean, twisted and grossly showy with his money. Like many of the old, rich and privileged men in Hustlers, it’s a cringe-worthy moment whenever Reese makes an appearance. So, it might be a surprise that, from 1991 until 2002, Whaley was a romantic comedy icon.

Back when every cinematic night-in-shining-armor wore blue jeans, outrageously patterned sweaters and the infamous white sneakers, Whaley was right there with John Cusack as the heroic underdog in love.

While Whaley might be more recently known for his role as Detective Rafael Scarfe in Marvel’s Luke Cage series, fans of the oldie-but-goodie rom-coms know him as Target’s best and brightest, Jim Dodge or aspiring comedian Jimmy O’Brien.

From illustrating the all-too-funny truths about teen angst love, to showing adult struggles with maintaining long-time relationships, Whaley has racked up a few signature swooners. Starring alongside talented stunners Jennifer Connelly, Annabeth Gish and Carla Gugino, here’s a list of Whaley’s romantic comedies you probably forgot about, but definitely will fall in love with all over again.
