In the Season 4 premiere of Riverdale, the series honors the legacy of Luke Perry and Fred Andrews with help from guest star Shannen Doherty.

When Riverdale returns for Season 4 on The CW this Wednesday, don’t expect the premiere to dive right into answering all of our burning questions. Instead, the teen drama will take a breath to honor the late Luke Perry and his character Fred Andrews, who were both the moral center of a show that could get otherwise pretty crazy. “In Memoriam,” the emotional season premiere, has been described as a standalone episode crafted to honor Perry in the way he deserved.

In the episode, the residents of Riverdale prepare for the town’s upcoming Independence Day parade and celebration, but Archie receives a heartbreaking phone call that will change his life. Perry’s close friend and Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty appears in the episode in a fitting guest role, and Molly Ringwald returns as Archie’s mother, Mary.

It will be a particularly difficult episode to watch, but there’s no better way to pay tribute to Luke Perry than to dedicate the premiere to his memory.

More from CW

How will the episode honor Luke and Fred? Who does Shannen Doherty play, and will she help Archie work through his grief? Does Archie channel his grief into healthy channels, or will it take him some time before he can see the light at the end of the tunnel?

While it’s unlikely that Riverdale will even touch on Season 4’s mystery, what’s in store for the rest of the season after the wonderful tribute to Luke Perry? Will Betty track down her mother and investigate the strange circumstances of her new brother? And will Jughead survive the season?
