The Addams Family review: Is nostalgia enough to keep audiences engaged?
By Sandy C.
An animated and family friendly Addams Family is here, but is the catchy tune and finger snaps enough to keep audiences engaged?
Whether you grew up watching the original Addams Family series or are a fan of the live action movies, chances are you had some interest in watching the animated Addams Family when you checked out the trailer. Still, you likely had your doubts about it, and I wouldn’t blame you. Is the nostalgia worth checking the latest movie in theaters? We break down why you should still go watch this quirky new version of the beloved family.
For starters, The Addams Family 2019 is perfectly casted, all voices truly bring these characters to life. In particular, Nick Kroll is a flawless Fester. And Allison Janney’s Margaux Needler gives the movie a new color and is a great villain.
The rest of the cast is rounded up by Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, and Bette Midler as Grandmama.

The story is also fun and engaging for children and adults alike. The story and creepy moments are light enough for children to laugh along instead of being freaked out. Rest assured, the characters and scenarios are still strange enough for the kids to know this isn’t an ordinary family and get the gist of it. And, parents (as well as old fans of the series) there are plenty of jokes only our dirty minds will understand.

Despite the fun nostalgia, brilliant cast, and just the right amount of darkness to be a family-version of the original, I do have one complaint. The Addams Family comes on a little preachy and pushes the idea of family values a little too strong. I know, I know, family truly is everything, but we get the point. Kids are smart. When the message comes across too strongly, they’ll figure it out and ignore it.
Then again, a little acceptance of diversity may be something we all need more of nowadays. Go watch The Addams Family this weekend for some heartwarming family fun.
The Addams Family is now playing in theaters.
