Thus far, Batwoman has been advertising Alice as the main big bad for the first season. But a surprising twist at the end of Episode 2 might change things.

Rachel Skarsten has been hamming it up as the enigmatic and wily Alice, a villain who fancies herself a character from Wonderland. She and her Wonderland gang have already caused numerous problems for Kate and Gotham at large. But if you thought the twist in Batwoman’s pilot was shocking, you might be surprised at how the second episode ended.

If you haven’t watched both episodes of Batwoman, I advise you to turn back now because there are spoilers ahead!

Alice was revealed to be Kate’s long-lost twin sister, Beth Kane, at the end of the pilot. The second episode reveals a little more about Alice’s motivations. She is full of rage and hurt about being left behind in the car crash.

More from CW

Kate wins Alice’s favor, at least for a moment, by admitting that she hasn’t slept through the night since Beth went missing. She feels guilty for not going back for her sister. Kate also convinces her father, Jacob, to take Alice to Arkham. Jacob still isn’t convinced that Alice is his daughter but he relents to Kate’s pleas.

Alice isn’t done with her reign of terror yet, however. Before being ushered off to captivity, she lets Kate know with one of her trademark riddles that her step-sister, Mary, is in danger. Luckily, Mary is no damsel. She fends off Alice’s creepy boy toy and Kate manages to arrest him.

By all accounts, it appears Alice is Kate’s biggest threat this season, right? Well not quite.

At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Catherine, Mary’s mother, and Kate’s step-mom, was responsible for sending a gang after Kate earlier in the episode to retrieve Alice’s knife. (Kate originally intended to use the knife to get Alice’s DNA and prove to Jacob that Alice is Beth). Catherine was also the investigator on Beth’s case in the past that found her skull fragments. Fragments we now know must have been faked.

So what is Catherine’s motive? Why is she trying so hard to prevent Jacob from finding out that Beth is alive? Is Catherine really another Batwoman villain in disguise? Right now her character seems a little similar to Season 1 Moira Queen on Arrow.

Based on a recent Entertainment Weekly interview with Caroline Dries, she claims that Catherine “isn’t evil.” She just loves Jacob a lot. She doesn’t want anything to threaten her new family.

Dries goes on to say that Catherine has some more secrets that pertain to Kate’s history. It makes me think Catherine might working for someone higher-up that we haven’t met yet. If she’s doing someone else’s bidding, especially if someone is threatening Jacob or Mary, it would make sense why her actions are so sketchy.

I guess we’ll find out soon! Batwoman is certainly leaving us a lot of exciting mysteries to solve.
