Richard Flood has joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as the new Head of Pediatric Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial. This doesn’t mean Justin Chambers is leaving!

Grey Sloan Memorial has a new Head of Pediatric Surgery coming in. Shameless alum Richard Flood is joining Grey’s Anatomy, but this isn’t bad news for fans of Justin Chambers. We’re not saying goodbye to Alex Karev!

Deadline broke the news of the new casting, making it clear that a new Head of Pediatrics was coming in. However, fans immediately feared the worst about Karev. If Flood was in, would that mean Chambers was out? Even those completely up to date with the series started to panic.

More from ABC

Slow down! It isn’t anything bad for Chambers. Let’s look at the facts.

Right now, in the world of Grey’s Anatomy, Alex Karev is no longer working at Grey Sloan Memorial. He’s at Pacific Northwest (Pac-North), where he’s the chief and is trying hard to turn the failing hospital around. Richard Webber and another doc (I won’t name who for those not caught up with Oct. 17’s episode just yet) has joined his team.

But with Karev there, the position of Head of Pediatrics is open. That means Grey Sloan Memorial needs to fill the void. Richard Flood will play Dr. Cormac Hayes and will fill in that role.

Right now, Flood is joining the cast as a recurring role. That means he may not even be permanent. So, those fearing that it means Karev will never step through the doors of Grey Sloan again don’t have to worry just yet. However, I will admit that I love seeing him taking charge and working on turning the hospital. We get to see Karev have a storyline of his own, and one that could certainly help to turn things around.

It’s not clear how many episodes Flood will be in. We’ve seen recurring guest stars leave after a few episodes but others join the cast as series regulars later. This may be one of those cases where Grey’s Anatomy wants to see the chemistry and storyline potential first before deciding on a permanent decision.
