10. The Act
Who’s in it: Patricia Arquette, Joey King, AnnaSophia Robb, Chloë Sevigny, Calum Worthy
What it’s about: Based on Michelle Dean’s BuzzFeed article “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered,” The Act centers on Gypsy Blanchard (Joey King). As a result of a terminal illness, Gypsy remains in her wheelchair and under the care of her overprotective mother Dee Dee (Patricia Arquette). Gypsy begins to express interest in gaining independence, which only increases Dee Dee’s abusive and controlling behavior, leading to Gypsy to call for her mother’s death and the revelation of her Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
Why you should watch: Upon release, The Politician quickly drew comparisons to Election and Hulu’s Emmy-winning limited series The Act. In the series, Zoey Deutch plays Infinity Jackson, an ill student who Payton chooses as his running mate to pull a sympathy vote. Infinity has spent her life getting free vacations and gifts and dinners thanks to her grandmother, Dusty (Jessica Lange).
Obviously, Infinity has been led to believe she’s sick by her grandmother, who sought sympathy and such because of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Now, Infinity doesn’t kill Dusty, and The Politician’s portrayal of the condition has a much sillier tone than The Act or Sharp Objects. But if the topic interested viewers, The Act features a more realistic telling of a haunting true story.
Where you can watch: The Act is available to stream exclusively on Hulu.
