Who’s in it: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Jonathon Schaech, Nina Foch, Hal Holbrook
What it’s about: The Politician stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange headline the 1998 thriller Hush as a sparring daughter-in-law and mother-in-law duo. Helen (Paltrow) and Jackson (Johnathon Schaech) visit Jackson’s mother Martha (Lange) at the family horse farm in Kentucky. After getting pregnant and married, Helen and Jackson decide to move to the farm with Martha to help prepare it for sale. While living under the same roof, Martha becomes increasingly jealous of Jackson’s devotion to Helen and will do whatever it takes to have her son all to herself.
Why you should watch: Obviously, the biggest reason to watch Hush isn’t because it’s the greatest movie ever made, but because Paltrow and Lange share the screen in an unforgettable and oh-so ’90s showdown. Lange plays a character no unlike The Politician’s Dusty Jackson, an obsessive, if not delusional, maternal figure concerned with keeping total control of her child.
However, the sense of humor present in the Netflix drama isn’t underlining the hightened dramatics in Hush, a straightforward thriller that’s really only worth watching for its iconic leading women. If you’re a regular consumer of thrillers, you have seen many versions of Hush before. But have you seen a movie where Gwyneth Paltrow, nine months pregnant, runs away from Jessica Lange on an expansive farm, then narrowly evades being poisoned to death?
Where you can watch: Hush isn’t currently available to stream online, though it is available to rent and purchase.
