7. A Simple Favor
Who’s in it: Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Linda Cardellini, Jean Smart, Rupert Friend, Eric Johnson, Dustin Milligan
What it’s about: Based on the novel of the same name, A Simple Favor combines dark comedy, mystery, and thriller elements for a twisted story about friendship, power, and glory. Ring any bells? Anna Kendrick stars as mommy vlogger Stephanie Smothers, an overachieving classroom parent who befriends the intimidating businesswoman Emily Nelson (Blake Lively). When Emily asks Stephanie for a “simple favor,” she vanishes without a trace and unravels a winding road of long-kept secrets and unbelievable lies.
Why you should watch: First of all, everyone should watch A Simple Favor for the sole fact that the film was criminally underrated. With excellent direction from Paul Feig, an energetic central anchoring by Anna Kendrick, and a career-best Serena van der Woodsen on acid performance by Blake Lively, it was easily one of 2018’s best movies. But it also exists within the same realm as The Politician, given its shocking dialogue and jaw-dropping “did that just happen?!” plot twists.
Although A Simple Favor completes the perfect trifecta of lush dark mysteries along with Big Little Lies and Dead to Me (which Politician fans should also check out), there’s something about Lively’s Emily Nelson that fits right in with the madness at Saint Sebastian. If you think The Politician got weird and crazy, just wait until you hear the backstory of Kendrick’s Stephanie and her brother…
Where you can watch: A Simple Favor is currently available to stream on Hulu.
