3. The Royal Tenenbaums

Who’s in it: Danny Glover, Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson

What it’s about: The Royal Tenenbaums centers on the eccentric and estranged Tenenbaum family. Royal Tenebaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children prior to their separation, and each of the children were bred to be brilliant geniuses. However, a turbulent period for the family canceled out their supposed brilliance and the family fell out. The film follows the Tenenbaums as they suddenly reunite and try to put the past of betrayal behind them.

Why you should watch: When The Politician was release on Netflix, it was quickly described as having tonal similarities to The Act (already featured on this list), Wes Anderson films, and Election (still to come on this list). Naturally, the Wes Anderson film that comes to mind in comparison to The Politician is The Royal Tenenbaums for many more reasons than star Gwyneth Paltrow.

The film and the series share a flare for an absurdist sense of humor and an overall ironic quality that bleeds into every aspect. There’s no doubt that The Royal Tenenbaums was a major influence for The Politician on a certain level, and what a better excuse to watch a cult favorite film. Also, we all just need to watch more Gwyneth Paltrow movies. That’s the moral of the story.

Where you can watch: The Royal Tenenbaums isn’t currently available to stream online, though it is available to rent and purchase.
