3. The Shallows (2016)

Original Release Date: June 24, 2016

Box Office Earnings: The Shallows did great at the box office considering it earned well over $100 million on a $25 million budget.

Critical Acclaim: Blake Lively’s performance was praised for this film, which is a great feat considering she essentially carries the entire film on her back as the main character facing off against a shark.

About the Role: Blake portrays Nancy Adams, a young woman who travels to the same beach her mother used to go to in Baja, California. While there she gets stranded in the ocean and surrounded by a shark circling ever closer.

Simply the Best: As I mentioned above, Blake Lively has to carry the entire movie due to being the focal point of the story. It’s pretty extraordinary what they were able to accomplish with a simple story about one woman being cornered by a shark in the middle of the ocean with only a seagull as company.

Yet the film is able to deliver thrills, tension, and genuine heartwarming moments as we learn about Nancy’s past and her relationship with her mother, who died before the movie began. We’ve seen so many shark movies it’s hard to be impressed by one but The Shallows truly delivers.
