ABC has made an early decision for the ground-breaking comedy, Fresh Off the Boat. Will fans be treated to a seventh season?

ABC has made a decision over the fate of it’s ground-breaking comedy Fresh Off the Boat. Will it return for Season 7?

The sad answer for fans is no. ABC opted to canceled Fresh Off the Boat after six seasons, according to Deadline. The series finale will air Feb. 21, 2020. It will air at 9/8c for an hour.

While it’s sad news for fans, it’s not all that surprising. In fact, the Season 6 renewal earlier this year was extremely surprising and led to the controversy of Constant Wu not being happy with the renewal, possibly because she wants to focus on her growing movie career.

Fresh Off the Boat remains ABC’s lowest-rated show out of all 17 currently on the air, with a 0.45 demo average for Season 6. While the total audience isn’t the lowest, it is second-lowest at 2.361 million. The lowest is How to Get Away with Murder, which is ending after its current season.

The news of Fresh Off the Boat not getting a seventh season follows the news that ABC is moving forward with the spin-off comedy. Variety reports that the spin-off will begin filming at the middle of this month. It’s only the pilot episode now, but ABC will be able to make a decision on the future next year.

Will the spin-off happen without the parent show airing? It’s not often that this happens, but ABC knows the success it once had with the ground-breaking comedy. The cancellation would have been at the back of the minds of the execs when approving the pilot for the spin-off, so there’s still a good chance of it being picked up to series.
