Last Christmas is the first big new holiday movie of the season. The film is a surprisingly hilarious and sweet affair but one thing is still nagging at us.
Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding lead the charming ensemble of eclectic characters in this holiday’s first new Christmas movie, Last Christmas. The film follows Clarke’s character, Kate.
Kate is completely dysfunctional. She has no place to live and she works as an elf every day at a Christmas shop that is open all-year-round. It’s not until Kate meets sweet and irresistible Tom (Golding) that she begins to try changing her life for the better.
SPOILER ALERT: Do not continue reading if you haven’t watched Last Christmas yet. There are major spoilers for the film below.
Most nights after Kate gets off work, she and Tom meet up to explore the city. He takes her to some of his favorite spots and implores her to “look up” more often. It’s not until we reach the end of the movie that we learn Tom is a hallucination.

Last Christmas he literally gave Kate his heart during an organ transplant. Tom Webster is dead but Kate has his heart. Most audience members predicted this twist or something like it after the first trailer for the movie dropped.
That said, there is one major thing we can’t stop thinking about.
During one scene in the movie, “Tom” takes Kate ice-skating so she can better prepare to audition for Frozen on Ice. After the scene, Kate is seen walking away with two pairs of ice skates. Where did Kate get the second pair of skates if Tom never existed? Did the filmmakers throw that in to try to throw audiences off the scent?
There are some other strange film choices in the movie like the somewhat awkward relationship between Santa and Boy (Michelle Yeoh is a gem but the coupling of those two felt somewhat random) and the decision to make Kate and her family Russian. But this is one of those moments that will have us scratching our heads for a while.
