4. Picnic at Hanging Rock (2018)

Original Release: May 6, 2018

Ratings: This new version of Picnic at Hanging Rock initially premiered on the Australian television network called Showcase. It’s not clear what ratings were at the time. Several other networks acquired it on an international scale and eventually debuted in the United States as an Amazon Prime original.

Critical Acclaim: The series received a Certified Fresh seal of approval from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It was also nominated for several awards. Dormer’s performance was praised as being both charming and formidable.

About the Role: Natalie Dormer plays the sinister headmistress of a private school for girls in Australia. The school becomes known as Appleyard College. It is a tremendous success for Headmistress Hester Appleyard.

Simply the Best: If you have read the original novel or watched the 1975 film adaptation, then you know the general storyline of Picnic at Hanging Rock. Shock ripples through Appleyard College when three young girls and their governess suddenly vanish, seemingly into thin air.

Dormer is excellent as the Headmistress who will do whatever it takes to discover the secrets and mysteries of the missing girls. She has always excelled at playing morally ambiguous characters. Her facial features lend themselves to that. The miniseries follows along with the original book by Joan Lindsay rather than the previous film version.
