6. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Yes, ’90s kids, you can (and should!) watch The Nightmare Before Christmas on Disney Plus!

What it’s about: Set in a world where each holiday rules its own land, The Nightmare Before Christmas follows the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. Jack grows bored of his world. After stumbling into Christmas Town, he tries to bring the spirit of his newfound favorite back home; but everything goes horribly awry.

Nobody in Halloween Town quite gets that Christmas cheer, and Jack’s frustration eventually leads him to plot a Christmas takeover, complete with kidnapping Santa and delivering (ultimately terrifying) gifts to the children of Christmas Town himself.

It may not have been the intent when the film was originally made, but if the Santa hat fits? One might even argue that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a pretty good cautionary tale against cultural appropriation.

Why you should watch it on Disney Plus: Filmmaker Tim Burton’s use of stop-motion animation in this movie “brought stop-motion animation back to the forefront of filmmaking,” so the film nerd aspect alone—especially with the opportunity to stream it on today’s higher-definition screens—is a great reason to catch The Nightmare Before Christmas on Disney Plus.

It’s also a way to create a holiday tradition that’s somehow both pro and anti-Christmas at the same time; and, of course, there’s Jack and Sally’s love story to boot.
