The murder mystery trail is still cold on Nancy Drew as the show connects two murders, and ghosts, but suggests too many suspects.

Nancy Drew has been desperately trying to solve two murder mysteries with the occasional deceased bringing in the most valuable clues. Last week, it almost looked like we got a big break with the discovery of an additional suspect, Celia Hudson, thanks to Dead Lucy’s signal. Taking into account that Celia wasn’t fond of her son dating Lucy and that Lucy had spied Celia in an affair with Sebastian Marvin, she seemingly had a lot of motive to want Lucy dead.

Spoiler territory ahead, proceed with caution!

Unfortunately, in the world of Nancy Drew lying, cheating on your husband, and even the most nefarious behavior is not enough to make you a murderer. In “The tale of the Fallen Sea Queen,” we discover that Celia may not be the person we are looking for, at least for the time being. But last week’s reveal that Lucy and Tiffany’s murders are connected shrinks the pool of suspects considerably. And the Hudsons are in the lead for the family with the most circumstantial evidence.

Ryan Hudson dated Lucy and was married to Tiffany, so that makes him an attractive candidate. At this time, the only thing that Ryan is missing is an actual motive. While he might have killed his wife for money, there isn’t a convincing rationale for killing Lucy (that we are aware of). And while Celia is an incarnation of the Evil Queen out to get Snow White, she has an alibi and Lucy the ghost vouched for her innocence.

Not that Lucy came out in her Sea Queen dress and professed from the cliffs of Horseshoe Bay that Celia was free of all liability, but that Lucy confirmed through a seance that Celia wasn’t the one who did the deed. According to Victoria Fan, the ancient coins that Ryan Hudson wanted to put up for auction are like catnip for things that should have never been alive. They’re also good to use as a payphone to the undead if need be. And for the record, the creatures attracted to the coins are nothing but the dimensional beings from that one episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark only with good nails.

So Nancy rushes to use the coin’s powers for a seance to communicate with Lucy before the beings can do whatever it is they do. The last piece of the seance is George’s little Sister’s dragon head toy with flashing eyes and mouth that allows Lucy to flash yes or no. The seance was a quickie that ended with the priceless coins in a melted blob. So there goes Nancy’s undead calling card and Nick’s evidence that proves that the Hudson’s sunk their own ship to get insurance money. Not that Nancy cares about anything Nick is doing, which is why he broke up with her. No need to dab your eyes with fake astonishment, that breakup was a long time in the making.

But more importantly, here’s what we learned from the few questions Nancy was able to ask. Two different people killed Lucy and Tiffany, so we are actually looking for two murderers. The other crucial reveal is that Celia wasn’t the one that literally took out a knife and killed Lucy. But it still doesn’t absolve her of responsibility, because Lucy gave mixed signals as to whether the Hudsons were involved.

Nancy is eventually disconnected by the evil forces, and we never get to the bottom of who did what, but getting Lucy’s charm for the seance had already introduced yet another suspect. It seems that everyone had a bone to pick with Lucy, including the Sea Queen runner-up. Nancy finds out after interviewing her that she had whispered to Lucy during the Sea Queen pageant that there were rumors that Lucy was sleeping around to get ahead, and the judges were no exception. Luckily, George gives the runner up a sample of her sharp wit for slut-shaming.

Despite all of these people with motives, Nancy Drew has failed to reveal real evidence. The show drags on a constant red herring adventure and hasn’t improved much considering that they’re pitching Carson Drew as a suspect AGAIN. Nancy discovered that her father was tracking her and intercepting her texts through their family plan, which means that he knows about the Tiffany blood work. And after some additional sleuthing, Nancy finds that her father went to the lab where Nancy’s scientist friend had Tiffany’s blood and Lucy’s evidence.

Giving that Nancy’s lab friend revealed that he couldn’t find the Lucy Sable evidence, it once again looks like Carson is covering someone’s tracks. Actually, it seems like the show has info dumped a ton of incriminating evidence on Carson. In addition to Carson’s sneakiness, Nancy found out that Lucy was haunting her because of the dress in the attic, which means that the bloody prom outfit Carson burned was the real thing. Nick also revealed to Nancy that the week of Lucy’s murder, Carson received a mysterious 50 grand pay off from the Hudsons.

Carson is currently trumping even Ryan Hudson in the motive and evidence department. And while Nancy didn’t have the gall to ask Lucy about her father’s involvement, she did end up blatantly asking him at their first dinner if he killed Lucy. But We’ll have to wait till next episode to find out how Carson is going to handle proving his innocence. Let’s hope that some real proof makes its way to Nancy.
