Best of the 2010s in 2019: Donna and Harvey, “Darvey,” from Suits

As a surprise to absolutely nobody who has followed me for more than 12 seconds, Darvey’s relationship is the one love story from not just 2019 but, really, the entirety of the 2010s that I’ll never forget as long as I live. From their first appearance in 2011’s Suits pilot, to their final goodbye to viewers in 2019’s series finale, Donna Paulsen and Harvey Specter were the ship to follow. There’s no “best of the 2010s” without them. Period.

Here were two people who, after one night together over a decade before we ever met them, shut their romantic feelings away in an attempt to be able to hold on to their one sure thing: their working partnership. After all, Donna had a personal policy against mixing the personal with the professional (until she suddenly didn’t); and then there was Harvey. He was too afraid to risk the pain of losing someone he loved, especially after his mom’s infidelity had broken him. So, Darvey played it safe and were each other’s better halves in every way but one. Theirs was a friendly love, a platonic one. Or so they told themselves, over and over again, until it just became too difficult to lie anymore.

In 2019, Harvey Specter finally realized there was no point in taking the big victories if it meant not having the woman he loved by his side; and, so, the duo that probably already would have been the best of the 2010s for just how close they were and how much they protected each other over these past 10 years finally became a couple in every sense of the word. Not only did Darvey finally hook up; but with so little time for their relationship to flourish between the time Harvey showed up at Donna’s door and the time Suits ended, they still managed to make up for lost time. Those three huge words, “I love you” were exchanged freely over coffee; the couple supported each other through the firm drama as always; and then, of course, there was the wedding.

It might have taken forever, and might have even been a bit out of the ordinary, but that Darvey wedding? Best of the 2010s. Hands down. Now, if only we could have had more time with them—or at least could have learned what the can opener ritual was all about.
