3. Rick and Morty (2013-present)

Of all the TV shows on the list, this is the most recent besides Paw Patrol. Unlike Paw Patrol though, Rick and Morty is firmly made with an adult viewer in mind. Premiering back in 2013, the series has become a huge fixture in pop culture and is easily one of the most recognizable cartoon shows from the decade.

Originally based on Justin Roiland’s Back to the Future parody, Rick and Morty follow Rick Sanchez, an evil genius/mad scientist and his grandson, Morty as they go on adventures. As far as premises go, this is the most bare-bones description of the show. While most episodes revolve around Rick and Morty going on adventures together, the show touches on much deeper topics as it’s been coined the “smartest show on TV.” Regardless, the series has an undeniable comedic charm to it as well.

Since the show began airing in 2013, it has become a major hit for Adult Swim and brought with it a humongous fandom. With that has come merchandise, fan art, a comic series, video games and basically anything you can imagine. Similar to the My Little Pony fandom though, Rick and Morty’s fandom usually gets a bad rep due to the behavior of some fans. Regardless, it is still one of the most popular shows currently airing on TV.

Unlike some others on this list, Rick and Morty will be going on for a while. The series received a 70-episode order from Adult Swim. The first five of those seventy episodes are currently airing on Adult Swim. It’s hard to think of a time when Adult Swim wasn’t airing Rick and Morty as it’s become such a major fixture on TV since 2013.
