5. Documentary Now!

Original Release Date: Season 1 of the series premiered on IFC on August 20, 2015, and it has recently been renewed for a fourth season.

Critical Review: Was there any doubt that a collaboration of Bill Hader, Seth Myers, Fred Armisen, Rhys Thomas, and John Mulaney would be anything less than spectacular? The series premiered to rave reviews, racking up a total of six Primetime Emmy nominations since its first season.

About the Role: Bill Hader is both co-creator and one of the stars of Documentary Now! He performs various roles that all feel very much like SNL characters who have wandered onto the wrong set. My favorite is probably…all of them.

Simply the Best: A mockumentary series hosted by Helen Mirren that spoofs celebrated documentary films by parodying the style of each documentary with a similar, but fictitious, subject. The series doesn’t skew to the sitcom-style and pays homage to the documentaries that inspire each episode, mocking their show of “truth” in addition to honoring their subjects.

The whole thing feels like a slightly less colorful version of Saturday Night Live but unlike the late-night show, Documentary Now! has the luxury of surrounding itself in complete deadpan humor while diving into a single subject for each episode. The subject matter offers a chance to laugh at something we’re not used to laughing at. The documentaries parodied in the series are moving, inspirational, dramatic or sullen features but when showed in Documentary Now! they’re subjects of humor.
