3. Frontier

Original Run: November 6, 2016 – December 21, 2018

Ratings: Frontier was a Netflix Original series commissioned by Discovery Canada. We don’t know much about its ratings information but the show was canceled by the streaming service earlier this year.

Critical Acclaim: Frontier received mixed reviews from critics who appreciated Momoa’s charismatic performance as Declan Harp but felt the pacing was too slow. Audiences, however, loved the series.

About the Role: On Frontier, Jason Momoa played notable fur trader Declan Harp, who is part-Cree and part-Irish. He has a long-standing grudge against the Hudson Bay Trading Company, specifically Lord Benton, who murdered Declan’s wife.

Simply the Best: I once saw someone say that Frontier was a little bit like Game of Thrones except everyone was fighting for control over the fur trade instead of the Iron Throne and I think that is a fair assessment.

The series is really about Declan and his desire to overthrow the Hudson Bay Trading Company once and for all, but it’s a long journey to get to that point and there are a lot of other fascinating characters and storylines on the series to keep you hooked. Tune in for Momoa, but stay for everything else (and Jason too, of course). Declan is definitely one of Jason’s best characters.
