Eddie Murphy has returned to Saturday Night Live after over three decades! Here are the best and worst sketches from the latest SNL.

After 35 years, Eddie Murphy is back home to where it all started. The last time Murphy took over Saturday Night Live‘s hosting duties was 1984. Needless to say, Eddie Murphy as the host  for the last episode of the year (and decade), and the sketch comedy’s Christmas episode is the best gift of all. That’s not an easy task, but no one could have done it better than Murphy.

Murphy stepped on the stage to a huge round of applause from the crowd, and the audience only became louder when Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle joined him on stage. Several sketches also featured some of our favorite stars, such as Maya Rudolph and Jason Sudeikis. Our favorite SNL Eddie Murphy characters also surprised us.

The best sketches

Mr. Robinson: The character we were all hoping to see again is definitely Mr. Robinson! A few things have changed since Mr. Robinson last appeared on SNL. As he explains, the neighborhood has gone through gentrification. We’ll update the video above as soon as Saturday Night Live updates it!

More from NBC

Hosting Christmas: Here’s a sketch we can ALL relate to this holiday season — the frustrating task of hosting Christmas dinner. Let’s be honest, no one likes to host. It’s simply too stressful. Preparing dinner, cleaning (both before and after), and just making everything perfect. Oh, and don’t forget you’re also in charge of entertaining. This sketch felt too real.

The Masked Singer: Audiences are divided about Fox’s The Masked Singer, but I’m sure we can all agree that SNL‘s version of the reality competition series is a lot more fun! The best part is, of course, Buckwheat making an appearance.

Cake competition: Not our favorite sketch of the night, but fun to watch nonetheless! We particularly enjoyed watching Murphy go off-script and accidentally curse. We love when the cast is having so much fun they can’t resist.

Black Jeopardy: Velvet Jones is back! He is still promoting his book, “I wanna be a ho.” Let’s just say Mr. Jones is still up to his old tricks and they couldn’t be more outdated (and sexists). Darnell Hayes (Kenan Thompson) tries to correct him, but some people never change!

Christmas Elf: Trouble at Santa’s workshop! This sketch brought us a special report from the North Pole. An accident has occurred at Santa’s workshop and here with all the details is Eddie Murphy the elf. The reporter is waiting for official confirmation, but who needs that when Murphy is here?

Searching for the worst sketches? Sorry, you won’t find them here! That’s because there weren’t any. We enjoyed them all! Did you expect any less from Eddie Murphy? He can do no wrong and it was a joy seeing him back on Saturday Night Live.
