Spies in Disguise arrived to theaters in time for families to watch over the holiday break. With kids off school, it’s a no-brainer to go, but is it entertaining enough for the young ones?

By now, we all know that just because a movie is animated, doesn’t mean it’s geared only towards children. In fact, many family movies include plenty of jokes only parents will understand, while also staying true to its genre by providing laughs and life lessons for the kids. How does Spies in Disguise, starring the voices of Will Smith and Tom Holland, rank among this years children movies?

My family and I had the chance to catch Spies in Disguise before it premiered in theaters. Being a fan of both Holland and Smith, I went in optimistic. My 6-year-old was just as eager, ready to dive into the mystery and fascinated by the fact that the movie is about spies. What little boy isn’t into a good spy movie? This could have been James Bond meets Mission Impossible, but for kids. The keywords here are “could have been.”

Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into this movie. As much as I wanted to, I wasn’t entertained and the plot just didn’t work for me. This says a lot, as I’m not at all a harsh movie-viewer. I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to movies and TV.

Who cares about my opinion, though? It’s all about the kids here! Therefore, I gotta say that my 6-year-old had a great time! He did become a bit antsy towards the final act, but ended up getting back into it once the last battle scene commenced.

A little warning to the parents is to go in for the children, don’t expect to love it as much as they will. This is your worst case scenario. Because hey, you may end up loving it yourself. Over at Rotten Tomatoes, the movie does have a fresh score of 73% from critics and a 93% from audiences. This seems to only be my unpopular opinion.

As for how safe it is for your young one to watch: Common Sense Media recommends the movie for kids over the age of eight. I, however, believe any child over 5-years-old will be fine. Your call!

Spies in Disguise is now playing in theaters everywhere.
