6. Billy, Stranger Things

Who would have thought we’d ever cry over the loss of a bully? Billy was the one we hated for so long on Stranger Things, and then Season 3 hit us. Despite all the bad, he redeemed himself and died a hero, and that makes him one of the saddest TV deaths of the year.

More from Entertainment

Throughout the season, we got glimpses of the boy that he once was. All his actions were explained in some way, even if they weren’t excusable. In the end, it was his actions that had us crying. Billy sacrificed his own life to make sure El got away safely.

5. Abby, The 100

The 100 Season 6 restarted the story in a way. We saw Wonkru become Skaikru again, this time entering a world they didn’t know. However, it soon turned out that people from Earth had landed on Alpha long before Wonkru.

With a new planet came plenty of twists, reveals, and deaths. One of those was Abby Griffin, Clarke’s mom. And there wasn’t even a major storyline surrounding it. Just as she gained redemption, she was taken over by Simone Lightbourne. We’d hoped Abby would survive the way that Clarke did, but in the end, Clarke learned her mother had died.

The news was revealed at the very end of the sixth season. Clarke hasn’t had the chance to grieve properly yet, but there’s a chance for that in the final season.
