Knives Out was snubbed at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. Despite that, Rian Johnson is planning a sequel centered around Daniel Craig.

Knives Out was one of 2019’s most highly-anticipated films ahead of its Thanksgiving weekend release. Boasting an all-star ensemble cast with the likes of Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans and Toni Collette, among many others, Rian Johnson’s whodunnit continues to impress at the box office.

Coming out with a $40 million budget, Knives Out has grossed nearly $250 million worldwide and counting. Five weeks removed from its initial release, the murder mystery only dropped -9% at the box office over the Jan. 3 weekend while drawing another $9 million, per Exhibitor Relations Co.

The success at the box office didn’t exactly translate to success at this year’s Golden Globes. Knives Out was unfortunately snubbed in all three categories it was up for. Best Comedy/Musical Picture went to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Daniel Craig lost Best Comedy/Musical Actor to Taron Egerton for Rocketman, while Ana de Armas lost Best Comedy/Musical Actress to Awkwafina for The Farewell.

My hopes were high that at least one victory would be had for one of the best movies of the year, yet the losses were understandable considering the competition. Even before the results were revealed, Rian Johnson made sure people were talking about Knives Out when he revealed to the Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night that he’s working on a sequel “centered on Daniel Craig’s Southern detective Benoit Blanc investigating a new case.”

Craig was without a doubt a show-stealer with his hilarious role as Blanc, earning him his first Golden Globes nom after nearly thirty years of bringing different characters to life on the big screen. It’s no wonder that he’d be eager to put on his detective coat again for a new adventure.

As the report states, a sequel has yet to be green-lit by Lionsgate, but they’d almost be fools not to considering the box office success and unanimous reception. One can hope that Ana de Armas will be part of the new project as well should it come to fruition.

In an era full of reboots and sequels, Knives Out will stand among the best of the best whether it receives any more award nominations. It wouldn’t be hard to believe the Daniel Craig-centered sequel could secure him his first Golden Globe trophy.
