9. The Falling

Original Release Date: October 11, 2014

Box Office: It wasn’t quite a success, unfortunately. The movie didn’t manage to earn back its budget, falling just short at $663,738.

Critical Acclaim: While the movie flew under the radar, for the most part, critics did enjoy it. The film earned praise for its eerie atmosphere and particularly for the performances from lead actresses Maisie Williams and Florence Pugh.

About the Role: Pugh plays Abigail Mortimer. William’s character, Lydia Lamont, becomes fixated on Abbie after suffering from a tragedy in her home.

Simply the Best: Critics were thoroughly impressed with Pugh’s ability to play her uncomfortable teenage character in this film, especially given how excellent she was at showing Abbie’s vulnerability. If you enjoy movies about female friendship, especially with an air of mystery and intrigue, then The Falling should be high on your list.

It helps that the acting is so compelling, you’ll be surprised to see such mature turns from the very young Williams and Pugh. Both women have since blossomed into adept actresses and this gives you a taste of how talented they’ve been from the very beginning. Pugh was nominated for Best British Newcomer at the London Film Festival 2014.
